It was a bittersweet day for Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc, who won his first F1 grand prix in Belgium on Sunday, having left the grid in pole position. It was also the first success for Ferrari this season, as he came in ahead of the Mercedes pair Hamilton and Bottas.
However, the glory of his first win was overshadowed by the death of Antoine Hubert in the F2 race on Saturday.
“It’s a childhood dream, but it’s also been a very difficult weekend and yesterday I lost a friend,” he said of Anthoine Hubert who was killed in a violent collision in the second lap of the Formula 2 race with Juan Manuel Correa and Giuliano Alesi.
“I can not fully enjoy this moment,” Leclerc said. Rival driver Lewis Hamilton said of the tragedy that it must serve as a reminder of how dangerous Formula races remain.
