SBM Offshore and the Monaco Government are cooperating in a programme to convert the power of the waves into electrical power.
This device is a world first, and is a major technological breakthrough. Already tested in the laboratory, the system still needs to be trialled at sea before its commercialisation. A prototype will be deployed in Monegasque waters off Fontvieille heliport from 2021 for a test period of one year.
The Prince’s Government is working closely with SBM Offshore’s technical teams in this early phase. Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Infrastructure, Environment and Urban Development, said that, thanks to its Princes, Monaco is a land of innovation.
The demonstrator will be in the form of arubber rod 60 metres long and 1.2 metres in diameter submerged at a depth of four metres. The footprint of the experimental site is approximately 300 metres x 80 metres with the anchors.
