A housekeeper has narrowly escaped serving time in jail following her conviction for stealing 20,000 euros from her employer.

The defendant told Monaco Criminal Court that she had taken the cash to pay for her daughter’s cancer treatment, but had since repaid her former employer. The court heard that the guilty party was treated more or less as part of the family, and enjoyed the total trust of her employers, who paid her in cash.

However, the prosecution said that an examination of video surveillance showed the defendant stealing small sums from the clothing of the family in question.

In her defence, the court heard that the accused had returned to Monaco from her home in Italy to answer to the court.

Bearing in mind that the accused always worked hard and was constantly faced with temptations, she was sentenced to eight days in jail, suspended.
