An enquiry is underway after the discovery on Thursday night of an assumed suicide at Monaco’s jail.

The 28 year-old Romanian national was alone in his cell at the time and had used his bed sheet to suspend himself from the ceiling. He had been on remand since August and was to appear at Monaco Criminal Court charged with theft and using fraudulent means of payment.

An autopsy has been ordered and an enquiry opened by the Prosecutor’s Office. This is the first recorded suicide at the facility. There were 131 recorded suicides in French prisons during 2018.
