Dr Ellen Pikitch, Professor at Stony Brook University, New York, and Chief Scientific Officer of the Ocean Sanctuary Alliance, presented a study entitled “Gaps in the Protection of Important Ocean Areas” at the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the United Nations in New York on December 4, 2019.

The presentation showed that many maritime regions identified as needing protection are not designated as Marine Protected Areas, especially in Exclusive Economic Zones. The interest of this study lies in the analysis of data compiled on the World Database on the Protected Areas database managed by the United Nations Environment Program and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

As a reminder, Sustainable Development Goal 14 has not yet been reached. To support the implementation of SDG 14, the Conference to be held in Lisbon next June will help strengthen the ocean agenda.
