Could a 3D printer replace Rembrandt or could a computer create a movie soundtrack that wins an Oscar? More than 100 participants in a TEDxMonteCarlo Salon debated these and other issues, exploring “disruptive creation in the arts”.
Providing a professional perspective were local experts in art and music. Eline de Kat, Artistic Coordinator for the MonteCarlo Opera, agreed that technology can – and has – played an important role in enhancing the experience for the opera-going audience but dismissed the idea that music produced by algorithms could evoke emotion.
Well-known painter (and Artic explorer) Toby Wright described the technical and creative challenge of drawing orcas and sea lions while submerged underwater. Sotheby’s Director Mark Armstrong discussed the impact of computer-enhanced art on future sales by galleries and auction houses.
The two-hour event opened with a performance by students of the Princess Grace Academy of Dance. The dance had been especially choreographed for the evening by five of the dancers inspired by the music of jazz-fusion legend, and local resident John McLaughlin.
TEDx Monte Carlo will host five interactive Salons during 2020 prior to launching its major event, featuring more than a dozen international and local speakers and experts in the fields of technology, entertainment and design.
