Valentines Day home win for AS Monaco
The boys in red and white faced off against Montpellier on Friday, February 14, at Stade Louis II in a match that brought only one goal.
However, Monaco celebrated their third successive Ligue 1 victory thanks to an impressive header by Islam Slimani. The Algerian striker took advantage of his stature and rose to meet a corner ball in the 52nd minute, managing to place it just below Montpellier goalkeeper Bertaud.
Monaco could have won by a much larger margin as a string of chances were squandered. Shots were being taken from both sides threatening a change to the scoreline at any moment.
This victory lifts Monaco to fifth place on the table just three places off the Champions League qualifying places. Regardless of this, the improvement of the same team from the beginning and near the end of the same season is very commendable. Monaco had struggled to move away from the relegation zone but now sit comfortably near the top.
Perhaps this is due to new and old players coming together more as a team or a change in management, or a little of both. Either way the principality side will be looking to make it four consecutive wins as they face off away against Dijon FCO on Saturday, February 22, with the kick off at 20:00 local time.
