In the latest development concerning UK air travel, the transport secretary’s suggestion in the House of Commons on Monday that there could be an ‘air bridge” connecting countries with a low incidence of coronavirus – the UK among them in his thinking – was called into question by a spokesman for the Prime Minister, who said on Tuesday – one day later – that the idea was “an option under consideration but not agreed government policy”.
At an unknown time in the near future government will announce a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK from overseas, with the threat of fines between £1,000 and £10,000 for anyone failing to remain at their designated self-isolation address for the entire period. It is thought that the self-isolation rule will come into force in early June.
The so-called quarantine has been attacked and ridiculed by critics, who say it’s too late and too damaging to the UK economy. The UK now has the highest coronavirus incidence rate in Europe.
