Having already drunk way beyond the legal limit on August 12, a tourist from Lyon collided with a signpost and a structural arch in the Rocher tunnel between Fontvieille and Condamine while on his way for another drink in Larvotto, local French-language daily Monaco Matin reported.
A blood sample taken from the 26 year-old construction worker showed an alcohol level of 2.8 grams, very substantially over the legal limit, Monaco’s Criminal Court was told last week. He also had four previous convictions in France, including for drunken driving.
Appearing in handcuffs, the defendant said he had simply taken the bend too fast, and did not feel that he had drunk too much, despite consuming five pastis and two beers earlier in the day at the Monte-Carlo Bay. He was given a two-month suspended jail sentence and fined 45 euros.
